Gunung Ledang
The Lagenda trail, which extends from the park entrance (Taman Hutan Lagenda) to the summit of Gunung Ledang, is amongst the most popular mountain climbing routes in the country. While a return trip to the summit can be completed in a day if you start off early, it is better to break the journey into two days. By doing so, you will be able to view the sunrise and/or sunset from the peak, which is often an unforgettable experience.
If you choose the overnight package, you will camp at the Kolam Gajah camp at 534 meters above sea level. The campsite can fit up to 50 people, has basic toilet facilities and a prayer area, as well as a water source nearby.
Although the hike to the summit takes only about half a day, it is not easy by any means, especially past the halfway point. You will need to climb up ladders on near-vertical granite rock faces, squeeze through narrow crevices and scramble across steep and rocky slopes. As such, a reasonable degree of fitness and conditioning is required.
There are a few mountain climbing packages available; each with slightly different itineraries (there are also non-mountain climbing packages as well). JNPC enforces a limit on the number of climbers per day in order to minimise the impact on the mountain, so be sure to book at least a month in advance to avoid disappointment.
There is also a secondary route to the summit that traverses the northern slopes of the mountain. This is known as the Asahan trail, as it starts from Pos Asahan in Jasin, Melaka. With prior arrangement you can meet your guide at Pos Asahan for registration. For day trips to the peak, a cut off time is strictly enforced to reduce the risk of climbers being stranded on the mountain after dark. Those who have not reached the final checkpoint (CP7) by 1pm are not allowed to continue on towards the summit, and must turn back down. You also have the option of breaking the journey by camping at Padang Batu, which can fit up to 30 people.
Park rangers will lead you on a 3-4 hour long guided tour of the Denai Pokok Ara trail. Along the way, you will discover some of the more interesting flora and fauna of the park’s lower elevations, such as giant squirrels and “spectacle-wearing” monkeys. A crash course in basic jungle survival skills can be incorporated into the walk.
The park rangers can take you on a nocturnal tour of the forest near the visitor centre. You will get a chance to see the mammals, frogs, insects and geckos that come out at night, as well as glow-in-the-dark plants and fungi.
There are three spacious campsites in the vicinity of the park entrance (Taman Hutan Lagenda), which are equipped with toilets, bathrooms, surau as well as cooking and dining areas. Hikers can spend a night at the Kolam Gajah campsite along the Lagenda trail.
There are a few nice picnic spots along Sungai Ayer Puteh, just a short walk from the visitor centre. There are similar picnic spots along Sungai Ayer Panas, which is accessible from Lagenda Resort, a further 5km drive towards Segamat from the main park entrance (Taman Hutan Lagenda).
A jungle paintball showdown can be organised by an external service provider. Refer to the Packages page for more information.
Several trails in the park are suitable for mountain biking. Contact the park office for more information.
